My First Yoga Class
I took my first yoga class in high school, but it wasn't until after college when I moved to Costa Rica that yoga became part of my everyday routine. I quickly became aware that the sense of relaxation and peace of mind I felt in class was flowing into all areas of my life. Additionally, I began to feel the amazing physical benefits of yoga and made lasting friendships with the people I met in the studio.
My Yoga Love Story
Because I lived in a touristy city in a foreign country, I was constantly meeting people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and life experiences. The yoga studio was one of the places I always felt at home. It was a space of non-judgement, kindness and acceptance. The community at the studio exuded love to all people regardless of who they were, where they came from, or what they believed. When visiting home (Columbus, GA) one summer, I attended a yoga class at River Flow and immediately felt the same sense of community and connection.
I decided to further my practice by completing my 200-hr YTT at the White Lotus Foundation. The training deepened my knowledge of both the mental and physical long-term healing benefits of yoga and inspired me to share my practice with others.
My Favorite Source(s) for Inspiration
Yoga Beyond Belief by Ganga White changed my yoga practice by beautifully describing how every yoga practice and body is different and unique. It inspires readers to see the simple yet profound ways that practicing yoga can better one's life. The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle reinforces the idea that we have control over our mind, emotions, and the present moment. It encouraged me to make a conscience decision to choose to be happy and to accept things as they are instead of letting my emotions, thoughts and circumstances define my life.
My Yoga Challenge
One thing that I still struggle with in my yoga practice is knowing when to back off. I still find myself focusing on goals instead of listening to my body and what it needs in each moment.
Life Beyond Yoga
Since moving back a year ago, I am constantly amazed at the new developments and events happening in our community, and I enjoy experiencing all that Columbus has to offer. From market days, to unique and delicious restaurants, to whitewater rafting and many other outdoor events, there is always something new and exciting to be part of.
I also enjoy hiking and getting the opportunity to disconnect from the fast pace of life to spend time in nature. My hope as a yoga instructor is to help all students experience a safe and enjoyable yoga practice that will serve their body, mind and lifestyle in every way possible.
